Clifton and Plath on the Feminine Identity - Essay Example While they both appear to be in agreement on the nature of the feminine identity, their American perspectives differ vastly. Clifton, as an African-American, alludes to African themes, and brings into her poem questions about the duality within the African-American experience, and ultimately celebrates herself as a symbol of endurance. Plath's is decidedly different in its paradoxical nature. While her poem focuses on the vivacious and enigmatic legacy that she will leave behind, it is wholly centralized around her death, which creates a somewhat doomed undertone. But while both poets differ in their cultural perspectives, they both produce similar portrayals of the feminine identity as being one of strength, passion, and survival. Clifton brings many symbols to her poem that speak to the African-American, as well as the female experience. She describes herself as a "jungle girl/quick as a snake/a tree girl," (4-6). In aligning herself with such images as a jungle, a snake, and a tree-dweller, she is making a direct allusion to the African identity. Throughout American history, the image of the "African savage" was utilized as a means of persecution, keeping black-Americans under an oppressive rule by larger society. Africans were believed to be tribal jungle-dwellers, savage and uncivilized, and particularly dangerous for their lack of Christianization. Furthermore, the African religions were heavily focused on nature, spirits, demons, and magic, which made them even more frightening to white Americans, who were largely Protestant and highly hostile to Paganism and superstition. Clifton's reference to being "quick as a snake-" the snake being the Christian symbol of evil-seems to be an open embrace of the whi te-American view of the Africans as being aligned with evil and Satan-worship for their ritualistic beliefs. This embrace of a taboo culture is further emphasized in the repeated phrases: "I met me." She has met herself, meaning she has rediscovered her own identity-an identity that has long been buried under social beliefs that it was shameful, uncivilized, and even subhuman. But Clifton also brings a feminine element into her poem, calling herself a "jungle girl" and a "tree girl." Throughout western history, women have been aligned with nature, specifically with the cyclicality of nature, which is similar to the cyclicality of female fertility. Possibly even more revealing is Clifton's description of herself as being "quick as a snake." Snakes have also been ascribed to femininity as, in the Bible, it was a woman (Eve) who fell under the serpent's sway. These align with my values of compassion, caring, honesty and Respect. By understanding how I work best, I am better able to be a leader by utilizing my strengths to help hone those skills. 2. I am able to be successful by focusing on my ability to be an outgoing and emotionally invested leader ââ¬â demonstrating that I am dynamic in how I can learn, lead and relate, therefore showing others dynamic ways of approaching related tasks, and embracing ideas. 3. The areas of weakness that I possess are related to how I handle conflict. Per the conflict management assessment I realize that I have a very strong ability to try and resolve conflict, I do however have room for improvement. I need to work better at becoming adept at handling conflict so that I may do well with mediation, negotiation and anger management. Some common places to find them in nature are in the claws, plants and in horns from animals. Spirals are often found very often in plants.â⬠Spirals are found in Chinese Art and are used as an early symbol of our sun. Relating back to the Tang Dynasty, spirals were used in roof tiles as decorations for their homes in China. If you pull a strip of paper between your thumb and the edge of a knife, while pulling tightly, you can create a spiral from paper and use in decorations for art projects. Many people use these spirals in decorating gifts for birthdays and holidays and for the use in decorating rooms for special occasions. (Garndner, 1991) Very often, spirals are utilized in land art pieces. They are defined as geometrical loci of points that hold a certain set of properties and relations with a center point or focus area, such as sky spirals where the design comes from polar coordinate functions while the sky spirals show various levels of visual perception from the far distance. The spiralââ¬â¢s characteristic of cyclic and linear expansion demonstrates one of the best metaphors for showing time. It is often used as symbolic for demonstrating this concept. With sun spirals, there is a representation of the ultimate observatory, demonstrating various relations shared between the object of observation and the observer. The observer can walk in a concentrated path toward a linear path from the center point and move outward toward the edge of the spiral shape. The act of walking around in circles has been demonstrated during meditation and used in healing methods, as well. (Davis, 1993) Spirals are often used in mathematical equations and as symbols of mathematical equations. A conical spiral is a space curve given by a parametric equation, while a cornu spiral is used to show a plot in the complex plane of points in mathematical equations.à à à Many artists use spirals forms in their projects to express themselves with the flow of the shape of the spiral that moves outward from the center point into a never ending flow, showing freedom in their art projects and pieces that demonstrated openness in their works of art. A figure that resembles a daisy or sunflower which copies the geometric shape of a spiral because the form runs along the shape of the flowing spiral shape in creating the design. The shape is started in the center point of the design and arranged in an outward shape. Richard Serra uses the spiral shape in creating pieces of art when he creates sculptures. He uses five torque spirals, where he bends his objects to represent a never ending path in his creations. In his work he uses the curves showing man as being curved and round and not standing upright in his creations. Spiral shapes are often used in designing jewelry and crafts by many people creating various Celtic designs in their projects. Celtic spirals are second only to knot work designs as the symbols most associated with Celtic art. Like many other symbols associated with ancient Ireland, spirals held special meaning for the people who lived in Ireland. Hurricanes are also formed in the shape of a spiral. The eye of the hurricane is the center point and origin of the hurricane, while the storm rotates out in a spiral shaped direction and moves across the land at various speeds. Where the hurricane originates, the general physics shows that there is typically little or nothing that binds the various spirals that have formed. The spiral shape, in which the hurricane moves, shows the shape of the earthââ¬â¢s spin in its rotating pattern. There is a remarkable connection between avian flight patterns, stormy weather and the pinwheel. Each of these has a similar pattern which represents the shape of the spiral in their designs. Each demonstrate movement in their outwardly direction of movement. In the Golden Ratio, we can also see that there is an expanding nature of what is termed as logarithmic, and it is not to be confused with other spiral shapes. The logarithmic spiral is a familiar shape in things that grows and logarithmic spirals appear in various forms. Spirals appear when a falcon dives in a forward motion in gaining his prey of choice. This spiraled flight pattern shows a constant pattern while the birds maintain an angular flow as he dives. This pattern allows the falcon to keep a constant watch on his target. Galaxies, along with animals, plants and hurricanes, share in the similar design. They all share the equal trait in their shapes, where they show a spinning motion of movement in their forms. It is shown that galaxies rotate in the spiral direction which raised the question of why and in which direction it flows. It is understood that it does probably originate from a center point but the direction is unknown. It is often thought that it moves in the same direction as matter in the development of the creation of the universe and its surroundings. Astronomers donââ¬â¢t exactly know for sure why and how the galaxies, such as theà Milky Way were formed, but they had an initial amount of angular momentum, which gave the spinning motion and causes the Milky Way to get its spiraled arms. Mindel Sitomer (Mindel, 1974) explains and defines spirals and discusses the usage of spirals in many areas of their usage from creating oneââ¬Ës own projects of art, explaining the nature of plants and animals and in exploring the universe. Luckily, interviewingââ¬â¢s a skill like any other, and there are lots of ways you can practice and improve your game. This guide contains the best strategies for getting ready for a job interview and making an excellent impression on the hiring manager. Read on for13 essentialtips on what you should do before, during, and after your interview to land your target job! Before the Interviewâ⬠¦ There are lots of steps you can take to planfora job interview, from practicing your responses to common interview questions to picking out your outfit the night before. Preparation will not only help you rock your interview, but it will also calm your nerves by reducing all those scary unknowns. Read on for the six most important ways to get readyin the days leading up to your interview. #1: Map Your Route The last thing you want to happen on the day of your job interview is to be late. It would be pretty much the worst to end up running into the building feeling frazzled and out of breath. Getting lost and being late are disorienting and will distract you from doing a good job. To prevent this from happening, you should plan how and when to get to your interview beforehand. Map out the route and get a sense of traffic conditions or train schedule on that day. Then write down a schedule for that morning - when you need to wake up, meal prep, getting dressed - or whatever else you cando to take control of timing. A good rule of thumb is to plan to arrive near the building 25% of your total time early. If the commute takes two hours, try to be there 30 minutes early. If it takes 30 minutes, then give yourself seven to ten minutes of extra leeway. Then you can hang out and enter the building about five minutes before your interview. If youââ¬â¢re late on the day of your interview, youââ¬â¢ll get stressed outand start out on the wrong foot.If you walk in way too early, you'll probably make the other employees feel awkward as you lurkinthe entrance hall. They added that they wouldn't be too pleased if you tried to add them as a connection, though. Connecting on LinkedIn should be saved for people that you know. Finally, doing some research on your interviewer is also one other way to help you feel prepared. You can gain a sense of her professional and educational background. This knowledge can help you feel less nervous than you might walking into an interview with a completely anonymous person. #6: Prepare for Questioning The main part of your interview preparation should be thinking about your responses to common interview questions. Just about any interviewer will have questions on hand to explore your background and qualifications. Your interviewer will likely also ask follow-up questions aimed todig even deeper intowhat you have to say. Some common questions include, "Tell me about yourself," "Why do you want this job?" and "What would you contribute in this role?"
